In 1918 an election in Ireland overwhelmingly supported independence ... including in counties now in Northern Ireland.
People in the north were not given an option in 1921.The country was partitioned against it's will. |

| from what I understand of Irish history, Northern Ireland was given an option to join the rest of Ireland in '21. Religious differences made them more supportive of Britain than Catholic Ireland. Since then, Protistantism has decreased in Ireland and become so consentrated in Belfast that three of the six are now majority Catholic. If each county were given the option to join Ireland, the other three would not excercise it. |
